In the early 70's as Bonanza was winding down it's run; the producers were looking to the future. Before Young Sheldon, in a move that was ahead of its time, they decided to do a lighthearted prequel.
The show was a special effects nightmare. Instead of recasting a young Hoss, Dan Blocker wouldn't hear of it and wanted to remain. The pilot episodes budget spiraled out of control. Making Blocker look like a toddler required building oversized sets and filming in forced perspective. It was not good.
However, decades later this legendary pilot was still influencing Hollywood today. When Peter Jackson, a well-known Bonanza superfan, used it as a template for how NOT to film the hobbits of The Lord of the Rings.
